It was completely unplanned and impromptu. My friend had tickets to watch Chippendales at RWS and asked if I would like to go. I was half asleep in bed when I read his Whatsapp. "Sure…" In my mind, I read the text as Chip & Dale the cartoon so I continued on in dreamland thinking I was going for a musical of sorts. As it turned out, I was in for the direct opposite. Instead of PG entertainment, it was raunchy M18 Male Stripping, accompanied with song and dance. I have never been a fan of the male body like some women are about pecs, biceps, butt, etc. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate a well-toned body, I just never was the kind to be super into such. I will tell you however, that men who are too buff don't appeal to me.
Anyway, I was pleasantly surprised that the show was extremely entertaining, and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. I had previously attended a friend's Hen's Night whereby we engaged a male stripper. Now that was gross. The stripper was average looking and whilst his body was slightly above average, the entire "performance" was very in-your-face and quite a turn-off frankly. We spent the entire half hour squealing and squirming in our seats as we watched our poor friend have his crotch in her face and have whipped cream licked off her legs and chest. NOT CLASSY.
Chippendales was held at the convention centre of RWS. The audience, mainly women, with a small party of gays, were a fun lot and very intriguing to observe as well. The tickets don't come cheap, ranging from $198-$498 and yet there they were. Well dressed women who looked like they came from money or at least had deep pockets, there either with girlfriends or alone. Yup, there were some women that came alone, perhaps on vacation and passing time whilst their husbands entertained, I couldn't tell. But what surprised me, were not the European or American women in the audience who also were clearly having a great time; but the Singaporean women who unlike popular beliefs, were uninhibited (at least throughout the show), and thoroughly soaking in the atmosphere and what was being displayed in front of them. There were a lot of cat calls and smiles. Excitement was definitely in that room.
Perhaps compared to the Las Vegas crowd Chippendales were used to performing in front of, we were a relatively subdued crowd, but for me, a Singapore woman sitting there, I was pleased to see how all the women were embracing their singlehood and for some, perhaps singlehood for that night. It felt like a celebration of the female sexuality and power. Once a long time ago, it used to be just female strippers with the burping and smoking male crowd. Powerful men after work, enjoying some visual treats. Last night, it was screaming independent, capable women who had the means to pay for such expensive tickets to enjoy a classy and tasteful male strip show. It wasn't dodgy or cheap like some joint along the streets, but a well executed and well thought out concert which had everyone dancing and having an awesome time.
I wish I could have taken pictures but they were really strict on that. Take my word for it though, should Chippendales return to Singapore, grab a bunch of girlfriends and head down. You can expect a great time and I promise it's not repulsive or distasteful.
XoXo
